Sri Lanka Tops the List of the World’s Best Islands for 2025

In a major recognition for the country’s tourism potential, Sri Lanka has been ranked the No. 1 island in the world for 2025 by the global travel platform Big 7 Travel, beating out some of the most iconic island destinations across the globe, including the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador, Mo’orea in French Polynesia, and the Seychelles.

Described by the publication as “a teardrop-shaped island off the southern coast of India that has it all,” Sri Lanka secured the top position in the “50 Best Islands in the World” list released earlier this week. The ranking is based on a combination of aggregated scores from previous media coverage, editorial contributions by Big 7 Travel’s team, social media popularity, and travel trends emerging for 2025.

“It’s easy to see why Marco Polo called Sri Lanka ‘the finest island of its size in all the world,’” noted Big 7 Travel in their announcement.

Sri Lanka was praised for its golden beaches, misty highlands, ancient temples, terraced tea plantations, and thriving wildlife. The publication highlighted the country’s 833-mile-long coastline, offering everything from tranquil shores to surfing hotspots, and the unique opportunity to embark on wildlife safaris at Yala National Park, home to leopards, elephants, and a variety of endemic species.

The island’s ability to blend natural beauty with cultural heritage, colonial history, and warm hospitality makes it a standout destination for all types of travelers — whether adventure seekers, wellness tourists, history lovers, or food enthusiasts.

Sri Lanka surpassed several well-known island destinations, including:

2.  Mo’orea, French Polynesia

3.  Socotra, Yemen

4.  Madeira, Portugal

5.  The Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

6.  Great Exuma, Bahamas

7.  Seychelles

8.  Achill Island, Ireland

9.  Koh Lipe, Thailand

10.  Milos, Greece

Each of these islands is renowned in its own right, but Sri Lanka’s multidimensional appeal placed it at the very top.

This recognition is expected to give a further boost to Sri Lanka’s tourism industry as it continues to recover and grow following the disruptions of recent years. With international travel rebounding and destination marketing efforts intensifying, being named the World’s Best Island for 2025 positions Sri Lanka as a must-visit for global travelers.

Whether it’s exploring the ancient city of Anuradhapura, sipping Ceylon tea in Nuwara Eliya, relaxing along the beaches of Mirissa, or discovering wildlife in national parks, Sri Lanka offers an experience few places can rival.
